The Benevolent Heart Charity Classs – A Second Home for Underprivileged Children
In Toc Tien Commune, Phu My Town, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, the Trai Tim Nhan Ai (Kind Heart) charity class has become a second home for children facing exceptionally difficult circumstances, primarily those whose families earn a living by scavenging at the Tóc Tiên Waste Treatment Area.
Established by the volunteer group “Happiness from a Kind Heart” on a plot of over 1,000m² donated by Mr. Quach Binh Duing, the class officially opened on October 5, 2020, with 16 students. Just one day later, the number grew to 22.
Here, the children not only receive free literacy education but are also provided with lunch and a place to rest. The volunteer group supplies textbooks, school supplies, and during the opening ceremony, each child received 200,000 VND to purchase uniforms.
Teacher Tran Hue, the class’s head teacher, shared that most students arrived unable to read or write. Teaching children from grades 1 to 5 in a single classroom is a challenge, but with love and determination, the teachers work together to overcome these difficulties.
Stories like that of the three Sơn Nướng siblings, who followed their parents from Soc Trăng to Phu My to make a living at the Toc Tien landfill, or Thach Thi Thao Lan, a 9-year-old with congenital heart disease living with her impoverished grandmother, highlight the necessity and significance of this class. Thanks to the charity class, these children’s dreams of attending school have become a reality.
According to a preliminary survey by the Toc Tien Commune People’s Committee, there are more than 30 children aged 6 to 14 in the area who are illiterate, most of whom are from families that migrated from other provinces to work at the Tóc Tiên landfill.
The Benevolent Heart Charity Classs not only imparts knowledge but also serves as a nurturing ground for hope, helping these young children overcome hardships and strive for a brighter future.
